My First Time Teaching Yoga Class

Have you ever done something that just felt right? That was how it felt to teach my first yoga class. It felt like stepping into a room that I was curious about and realizing that I truly belonged there. It is a dream of mine to create space for women of color to enjoy community and practice yoga. For most of 2017, I have been working on my yoga practice in preparation for my Yoga Teacher Training that I will do in January of 2018.

This was a 30 minute yin yoga class on the campus of Franklin University. The class was part of an event hosted for the public by my undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The women in the room came from all over the Indianapolis area and the amount of melanin in the room was absolutely beautiful. 

In recent weeks I have sustained a stress fracture on my foot; I was worried that my injury would make it difficult to teach the class the way I wanted to. However, the class seemed to flow smoothly and I received wonderful feedback from the women who attended class. The room was full of genuine, great and graceful energy. I couldn't have asked for a better group.
